Pet Insurance
We highly recommend getting pet insurance for your Corgi. When we got Benji, we neglected to do this right away to save money and paid for it in veterinary bills. During the first few months of having him he began having awful diarrhea and was vomiting. We paid out of pocket for scans ($800 CAD) and were told he had some blockage in his intestine. We then had to pay for the operation (Over $5000 CAD) and the Vets found nothing! They mentioned they noticed his intestines were extremely inflamed and that he most likely has IBS and would have to deal with it for life (today he’s no longer on meds and is feeling great!). Pet Insurance would have saved us big time on this. Now because he has a condition on his record before we got the insurance, our coverage isn’t as good. Don’t make this same mistake, we strongly advise Corgi owners to get pet insurance immediately as you never know what could happen and it’s better to be safe than sorry.
Veterinary Bills
As mentioned above, vet bills add up very quickly. Compared to cats and other animals, dogs are just more costly in general for annual vet bill costs. Heartworm shots, tick medication and checkups all add up so it’s good to have insurance to offset some of these costs.
Food
Depending on your budget and what your dog can tolerate, food costs can add up. For example, Benji has to eat a specific hydrolyzed protein kibble in order to avoid having a flare up for his IBS.
